So you’re saying such passion used to exist in 1980. If you say so who am I to question it? I was only 5 years old at the time. But I am from a generation that grew up getting fed desperation and cynicism. When I was recently invited to write a poem on “Abeshas and Love” for a monthly poetry night in D.C., it ended up being very cynical as almost expected. I will see if I can post it for comparison. If I ever wanna rekindle or have a second run at a distant memory passion, I would like to get permission to serenade the honey using your poem.

2 - Wegesha,

When I wrote that poem 18 years ago, the atmosphere was also cynical, but perhaps not as cynical as these days. You can use or abuse the poem as you wish, although I suspect that as a Wegesha you might have more effective means of mending a broken heart than an Amharic poem written by a nonentity. (Comment this)

4 - Like an idiot, I was recently rudely awakened by the idea that humanity has progressed so much over the few thousand recorded years, and along the way developed methodologies for transferring and augmenting knowledge in pretty much all ares relevant to our existence, but one thing - love. Ah, and to think how many will give up all else that they know just to to get some assurance of love ...

Poems may seem a beautiful play of words, but they don't grip us to the fullest until we've walked a similar path of pain as the poet. The same emotions that choked a poor soul five hundred years ago are felt as raw by one of us today. Why?

Why isn't there a school of love? Why are poems wrriten 18 or hundred years ago still speaking to us? We've opened up . We've opened up media. We've shattered 'gender differences'. We've trashed taboos and expectations. Where is the message? Why doesn't it get any clearer? The only salvation (I know) lies in the knowledge that others have passed through love lost & love won, and we too shall ...? That's numbing. If a culprit could be pinned, that's criminal. (Heavens, are you laughing?)

I want my god damned curriculum of love ;-)

Oh well, maybe I am an idiot.

5 - I think Love in its pure sense is oblivious of the surrounding. I hope to read Wegeshas poems conceived when he is disrobed of his hard skin, which calloused while growing in desperate and cynical times.

Gisu, thinking positively I would commit plagiary and say "qirb new ayreqem yefiqir tensae" or
yemer anchi/ant hoye
yemer sewenete
yemer gelaye
yemer nafqote
yaweleh tensae (Comment this)
