Poet Laureate Tsegaye Gebre-Medhin

We are deeply saddened by the news of Poet Laureate Tsegaye Gebre-Mehdin's death. This is a tragic loss to all Ethiopians and fans of Ethiopian literature.

Two weeks ago, our own Wegesha had a heart to heart chat with the Poet Laureate at his residence in NYC. Wegesha will post his thoughts on the poet as well as his thoughts on the fruitful discussion. We also promise to post some of the invaluable works of Tsegaye Gebremedhin.

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Tsegaye Gebremedhin. His work will live on!

1 - Thanks guys for acting propmptly,
My sincere condolences to the family of poet laureate Tsegaye Gebremedhin. His legacy will live in the heart all Ethiopians and Africans. It was a tragic loss to Ethiopia, Africa and the world. I re read Negussaye Ayele's article on him several times, each time wishing a free Ethiopia where all the banned works of him will be published and played and most of all his vision the triumphant Ethiopia will prevail. I envy wegesha, the first and the last time I saw the great man was inside Ethiopian theatre passing his wisdom to young artists right after the end of a play, the majestic impression I got of him then will stay with me. (Comment this)

4 - Belaten Geta Tsegaye Gebremedhin is poet lauraete of Ethiopia. No other Ethiopian was celebrated like he was while alive. No other lived like he did. All his life, since he was a fifteen year old was destined to such greatness. Tsegaye was living the life most famous people could only dream of. He won't be missed because he is not dead. He lives forever. His name. Only his name could be a name to/of other very talented Ethiopian writers that were humbled with his greatness for the past few decades. Only him. And yet he always humbled himself and gave respect to other writers and playwrights of Ethiopian and other african origins all his life. Tsegay is not dead he doesn't need to be remembered as this or that kind of great person because he is not dead. For centuries to come his works will be there in our culture. Atse Tewodros was not admired very much specially in his last days and yet tewodros became great long after his death when Ethiopians came to their senses. Quite different with Tsegaye Gebremedihin. Tsegaye won the respect with his power for decades. I am sure he enjoyed every minute of it. He knew he was the greatest of them all. He lived that life. How many of you that feel sorry and want the rest of us to feel sorry can claim or have chances to be that great? Nobody lives forever on this earth and Tsegaye is too young to stop writing. Many will write though and Tsegaye will be with them in love with Africa and most of all his Ethiopia that he truly believes is the origin of mankind and managed to prove. sometimes nations admire their sons and daughters but at other times nations become nations because of sons and daughters. If Ethiopia didn't exist for eight thousand years as Tsegaye used to say so many times, he would've created her by himself. So strong is his love. He said what he wanted to say all along. Great nations have great people like that, and if not, great people like that make nations great. I'm 100% sure that the great poet Tsegaye, Belaten Geta Tsegaye Gebremedhin, the anthropologist, the playwright, one of the greatest Ethiopians ever, would like you to be proud of him and his Ethiopia that he helped to be great. Life is too short on this planet but few like Tsegaye very few like him get the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest and make this world a better place for the rest of us. (Comment this)

6 - one precious thing that I have brought with myself from Ethiopia is a book entitled 'Hamlet' translated by Tegaye Gebremedhin. How is it sad to lose such a man? Who can teach us our story, who can tell us about Abune Petros, Tewodros, and such alike in such harmony; in such a way that can lift our soul and leave their stories with us forever . By the way I remember he has a poem entitled 'mot atbelu' in his book "esat woy abeba', which says the writer can never be said dead as far as his works exist. Can u post it for us Wogesha? (Comment this)

8 - I know him right from the date While I was attendiding at Commecial college of addis ababa,He had been a guest panelist, the reminece that he ste up in my mind was His respection to the elders,While the public relation officer of that panel invite him,He just gave primacy to his respected great man Seifu Feleke the pioneerand previous dean of cmmercial college.
What I mean to say is to express his Degnified personal quality,In additon to that during the time of Derg while he was in prison, the activst prisoners started singing the song of Tomas
Abebe Amharic song which says " not only lack of food,we are hunered of Zealous Administraration,I never and ever forget that he was in a lachrimoise. He had been all pupose and restless.Let his pesonality kindled in our heart. (Comment this)

10 - He was a man of honor, but now he is a legendary poet whose work prevail the truth. Even if he's not here with us, his spirit, hardwork, and of all his determination will remain inside every Ethiopian. (Comment this)
