Can you go away and be poor far from here?

The last thing we want to see in the middle of our millennium celebration is poor people roaming through the streets of our beautiful capital city. Thankfully, the ever thoughtful government of ours has come up with a brilliant plan to deport those it believes are the poorest of the poor and do not deserve to be part of the celebration.

The same brilliant guys have also come up with the idea to postpone the Great Ethiopian Run.

1 - "It's good for the whole world, not only for Ethiopia," the report quoted a spokesman for the local group as saying. "Nobody wants to have this miserable life for their citizens," the spokesman said adding only those who volunteer will be moved.

Is that a joke?? That almost sounds like a quote from The Onion.

As for the postponement of the Great Ethiopian run ... I don't get it. It sounds retarded to me, but i would LOVE to hear what the reasoning is. (Comment this)

3 - let's not be overly cynical here. I know someone who works for the NGO that moved them. The choice is clear, either live as street people in addis or get set up to live outside the city with assitance on food and some other monetary assitance. As you know, people form the country side have been flocking to the city in droves over the last decade. It is just not a sustainable model going forward. Not sure if this is a good solution, but it is an attempt. We will see if they come flooding back after the parties are over or if it turns out that it is a good model to replicate.

disclaimer: I am not for the government. I am not for kicking out homelss people. This might be a totaly ploy to remove them from the city. (Comment this)

Aye Anchi Emama Ethiopia!

History warns us again and again and again
People sleep on dirt and mud
And gather in happiness and love
While the rich man pays his mansion off in blood
In the moment you are safe
An artist strives in lonely faith
The path to the truth rides with the weather

As the rain comes
As the pain comes
Open your eyes
Here the answer lies
Reach for a higher rung
Before the deed is done

As the rain comes again and again and again
History echoes……………… again and again and again
Rivers sing and oceans roar
You cannot leave who you are
No matter how long or how far
In desperation thoughts are prayed
With sacrifices to be made
On a razor’s edge all judgment will be weighed
Before the rain comes
Before the pain comes
Zig-zag around the storms
